Leadership is not a position but a state of oneself to take responsibility of more lives. When you take responsibility of even one more life then you are a leader. Weather at home or at office, if you are guiding even a single person then you are a leader, isn’t it? We all draw a circle of responsibility around ourself. Some people include their family members in that circle, some go beyond and include close relatives and some go beyond to include their friends and colleagues. There are also people who extend this circle to include the people of their city, states and country to eventually become the leaders of the country. So if you are touching even a single life, then you are a leader, rest all is just operating at different scales.
We might be top performers in our current managerial role but it takes a very different approach to move into the leadership shoes. As an HR professional I have seen people who were high performers in their previous organizations, now struggling with the leadership role. It is important to understand the importance of upgrading the “Inner software” of Manager version to the Leader Version. We do scale up with responsibilities but our inner institution still doesn’t match with the new environment and expectations.
Three “I” constitute the new features in the leadership upgrade for a Manager. These are Integrity, Intelligence and Insight. As a leader you need to manage other people or we can say other minds. If we are unable to manage our own mind, then we are only a “Leader by Chance”. If we are unable to manage our own mind then we are managing things by accident and accidently managed things will only lead to anxiety, insecurity and unpleasant state of mind, that will also effect the people around the leader.
Insight is one of the most important upgrade for a leader. His ability to develop insight is what makes him different from the others, because he is able to show his followers what they can’t see or believe. If this capability of Insight is missing from a leader, then there is no role for the leader, because the SOPs (Standard operating procedures) can be supervised by managers as well. The capability of being insightful is developed by developing the perception skills. The ability of being insightful creates the capability of creating the VISION for the company, followers and companions.
Since a leader has to interact and motivate the set of people towards a common goal, it is utmost important for him to be intelligent enough and flexible in his approach in dealing with people. There can’t be same leadership style template used for all, as everybody has different motivational drivers.
A leader can only lead when people want him to lead. This want can be created very easily by building the trust and establishing credibility. When the leader is seen as someone high on Integrity and someone who takes genuine interest in his people and their growth, people gradually start following the directions shown by him and develop the trust in the vision shown by the leader.
Most of the Managers get elevated basis their skills they display in their current job, but the leadership requires insightful capabilities than the hard skills. Managers by the virtue of the expectations are rightfully focussed (I won’t say myopic) about meeting the timelines and managing the projects only, but the essential people element and perception skills are needed to upgrade as a leader. The bottom line is that it is utmost important to Optimize Yourself to become a successful and respected leader. The minor Bug fixes in the upgrade come with time, but the Major upgrade is essential because the Circle of responsibility of a Leader contains more lives and dependent families.
